Twitter Stigma and the Over the Hill Crowd

“Nearly 28 percent of Twitter users are above the age of 45, while 26 percent users are between the ages of 15-24.,” reports NeXt Up, a research firm that recently ran an economic evaluation of Twitter.
This statistic surprises me considering most people I know above the age of 45 either do not have a basic understanding of how Twitter works or assume that a user must tweet about daily activities to be a Twitter participant. For those reluctant to join Twitter, I usually have to convince them that they can read news sources and other information in real time without actually tweeting. They need reassurance that they can keep their Metamucil dosing private and there is no need to broadcast it to the world.
Perhaps the television promotion of Twitter on Oprah and CNN, among other outlets, has encouraged the above 45 crowd to join. Nevertheless, I am quite curious to know the age of the average frequent tweeter. It certainly does not seem like the over 45 crowd from the profile pictures in the trending topics.
