edocrabSteelhorn Software is publicly beta testing a barcode scanner for the Blackberry.  It is called “edocrab” which is the word “barcode” spelled backwards.  Point-and-shoot at a UPC barcode and it transmits the UPC number to their database to find the best price for the product on the web and in stores.  In utilizes the GPS receiver on the Blackberry to find stores local to you.

The camera-scanner feature works on the Storm, Storm 2, Curve 8900 and Tour.  For other Blackberry devices, you can manually input the numbers found beneath the barcode.

Generally, it works well and has the potential to be a very good app as their barcode database grows.  I was able to find most books, music and electronics in their database. For many products, it will also pull up reviews from the web which can be browsed from within the app.

Point your Blackberry browser to edocrab.com to download.

Andoid has a similar app which searches the Google Product Search database.

Just checked this app out, it is very cool. Works great on my storm 2. You don’t actually have to take a picture, just scans with the camera. You can create watch lists and remembers many previously scanned items. Great work guys!
