Location-based Twitter trends is quickly gaining steam.  The Trendsmap.com website shows Twitter trends around the world overlaid on Google Maps.  The image below shows an example as of 1:30 pm on November 12, 2009 for New York City.  While some of the trends appearing have no decipherable meaning, the map provides a Twitter glimpse of any location.  Trendsmap currently relies on user inputted data in the location field of a Twitter profile to locate trends.  Although this information is probably accurate in the aggregate, Twitter mapping will become more accurate as Twitter releases a location-based API.  From the official Twitter blog:
A new API will allow developers to add latitude and longitude to any tweet. Folks will need to activate this new feature by choice because it will be off by default and the exact location data won’t be stored for an extended period of time. However, if people do opt-in to sharing location on a tweet-by-tweet basis, compelling context will be added to each burst of information.
