Google has teamed up with Wind River and Intel to bring powerful infotainment systems to cars. Google Android-based infotainment systems in cars may be available as early as next year according to John Bruggeman, chief marketing officer at Wind River (via Jeremy Korzeniewski at AutoBlog.com).
Android-for-cars could have its own receiver for pulling data from the internet (which would require an additional data plan) and/or it could rely on a smartphone’s data connection.
Expect this system compete favorably with the Microsoft/Ford Sync system. In addition to traditional bluetooth features, it will probably have text-to-speech for reading text messages and e-mails aloud in addition to navigation capabilities similar to the Motorola Droid smartphone.
It will be quite interesting if the Android-for-cars debuts at the CES 2010 because Ford’s CEO, Alan Mullaly, is scheduled to open the CES on January 7th in Las Vegas.
