googleGoogle unveiled its Google Visual Search product (formerly Google Goggles) on CNBC last night during a special entitled “Inside the Mind of Google” hosted by Maria Bartiromo.Google Visual Search will allow Android phones to snap a picture of virtually anything and search Google’s vast database for information about the image. For example, one could snap a picture of a famous piece of art and within seconds the Android phone would pull up information about the artwork. As one Google engineer explained, it augments your senses with additional information. Another example on the show was snapping a picture of a book cover to pull up book reviews.

Some early testers shown on the program were unimpressed with the service in its current form but one tester was quite impressed. The service did not appear to be polished so estimating an ETA would be difficult. Nonetheless, this service has the potential to dethrone Apple as the king of the smartphone.

Talton “Phases” Pettigrew’s post on Phandroid provides a more detailed summary of the service.
