Mozilla released Thunderbird 3.0 today, the update to its very popular, feature-rich e-mail client. You might want to hold off before clicking on the update, however.
Many of the popular extensions have not been updated yet. For example, the Lightning extension that adds calendar support will not work with Thunderbird 3.0. So, if you use Lightning (which can be integrated with Google Calendar) in Thunderbird 2.0, do not upgrade yet.
Thunderbird 3.0 looks promising. It offers: tabs, improved searching, faster load time, message archiving and “smart” folders. When the extensions are updated, Thunderbird 3.0 will be comparable to Outlook 2007 (perhaps preferable because Thunderbird is a Mozilla project and is completely free).
I will use Thunderbird for the e-mail grind until Mozilla Raindrop is released or Google Wave adequately supports POP/IMAP.
