Jonathan Rosenberg, SVP at Google for Product Management, just posted “The Meaning of Open” to the Official Google Blog. It is a reprint of an internal e-mail he sent to all Googlers last week, hence he practices what he preaches. Transparency is key to openness.
This is a highly-recommended read because “openness” helps to separate Google from the pack. Consider Google’s primary competitors on each front — Microsoft, Apple, wireless providers, etc. They do not support openness in a meaningful way. You probably can’t name another large public tech company that truly supports “openess.” I can’t.
