RSS is the most efficient way to aggregate your favorite newspapers and blogs and read them without bookmarking, page loading and clicking.  I wrote a more detailed description of RSS about one month ago that includes some tips on setting up RSS on a computer. Recently, some of the Crackberry guys started a campaign to encourage Google to release a version of its very popular Google Reader for the Blackberry. While I applaud their grassroots efforts, Google Reader subscriptions can be imported into the free Blackberry RSS reader Viigo. Instructions:

  1. Download Viigo from Blackberry App World or by visiting http://www.viigo.com/download (which is worth a visit if you’re unsure… you can test drive Viigo on the Download page).
  2. Complete the installation and initial setup.
  3. Click on the top link which is entitled “News & RSS.”
  4. Blackberry Button -> Add channel -> Add your own channel -> Add Aggregator -> Google Reader -> Username/Password -> Finish.
  5. Hit the Escape/Back Button until your are back to “News & RSS.”  Your feeds from Google Reader will appear as “YourName subscriptions in Google Reader.”
  6. Delete the pre-installed channels that do not interest you (e.g., Paris traffic reports).

You’re all set.  Tip: Scroll down to the bottom of your Google Reader feeds or simply hit B on the keyboard. You’ll see some helpful options under “Special Views,” including a view of all new items.

Viigo also has the ability to e-mail, Facebook or tweet any article you like.  Just scroll to the end of the article or hit B on the keyboard. You’ll find the whole list of options there.

Enjoy Viigo. It’s one of the perennially popular apps in Blackberry App World.
