RIM is blaming the second major Blackberry data outage in five days on recent updates to the Blackberry Messenger 5.0 app. Many customers received e-mails today that encourage them to download a fix: “please upgrade to version 5.0.0.57 as soon as possible.” To download the latest version, visit http://www.blackberry.com/blackberrymessenger.

RIM is being raked over the coals in the press for the most recent outage, deservingly so. Blackberry Messenger 5.0 is programmed in-house by RIM. One would expect RIM to better test its own apps prior to releasing them. RIM also scores poorly with early adopters with respect to hardware; consider the Storm 1 fiasco and the Tour trackball problems.

RIM has approximately 36 million Blackberry subscribers worldwide as of August 2009. The recent outage affected substantially all of the North American subscribers.
