AppAdvice.com broke the news early this morning that MuscleNerd, a member of the Dev-Team, jailbroke his iPad. Like jailbreaks for other Apple hardware, this allows unsigned apps to run on the device. Accordingly, apps from sources other than the official App Store can be installed once an iPad is jailbroken.

The jailbreak relies upon a bug in MobileSafari in iPhone firmware 3.1.3. and the exploit is called “Spirit.” Detailed step-by-step instructions are not yet available for others to use the exploit but they’re expected soon, along with an automated jailbreak application.

Now that the iPad can be cracked wide open by owners, the device may have even more mass appeal. Below is a video of the jailbroken iPad by MuscleNerd:
